Album Review: "Pet Sounds" (The Beach Boys)

The Beach Boys have often been called "America's Band”; It is an American rock band from California, active since 1961; They were popular because of the lyrics of their songs referring to the California culture.

Nowadays "Pet Sounds" is regarded as one of the finest albums of all time on many music magazines lists of greatest albums of all time, "Wouldn't It Be Nice" and "God Only Knows", show Brian Wilson's (founding member) improving mastery as a composer; other songs from this album are: “You Still Believe in Me”, “That’s Not Me”, “Don’t Talk”, "I’m Waiting for the Day", etc.

Even though I usually do not listen to this kind of music, I really enjoyed this album because the use of the different instruments makes it very interesting and also because the lyrics are really particular; my favorite song from this album is “That’s Not Me”, because it has beautiful content and it is really nice to listen to both the lyrics and the sound. Something that I found curious from this album is that the song “Let’s Go Away for Awhile” does not have lyrics; it is just the rhythm and the instruments playing. When I read the name of the song I was expecting from the content of the words.

During the career of this band many changes occurred; Brian Wilson developed mental illness and almost died because of his use of drugs. The rest of the group continued with their tours and after a time some of its members found their own bands.

  1. Car Wheels on Gravel Road

“Car wheels on a Gravel Road” is an amazing album by Lucinda Williams who is a country-folk-rock American’s songwriter inspired in to express in her own songs a lot of feelings and thoughts about women in general and how they confront their ex-lover’s situation such as: the sadness or the depression that a woman can feel when her boyfriend goes away and decides to leave her but she does not want to abandon him, that circumstances are showed in her own song called “can’t let go”. In this album, you can find a huge variety of her fascinating songs which have parts of the rock genre, another have ballads and country pieces, which is really difficult to establish a single genre for her style of music. Also Lucinda Williams shows in her songs her personal experiences a lot of them with remarkable love stories and she tries to mix all of those feelings in some songs that are found in this album, for example: In the song called “I lost it”, she uses expressions such as: “money can’t replace it, no memory can erase it”, they are briefly samples with regard to what she thinks about her ex lover or she is inspired in to show how a woman thinks about her own ex lover totally she reflects the love and the romance according what she has lived as her own stories about the emotional instability and the others women can be living too.
All of her songs are totally good emphasized on how we reflect about our own love’s experiences; all of these experiences are phases that everyone should pass around his/her life.
Moreover, she is nominated in a Grammy as a rock- female vocalist by the song “can’t let go” in which it was the most recognized and sensational song by this wonderful album. Lucinda even is working in other albums to continue pleasing to her fans.
